she accepted the lilies,

This figurative narrative painting is all about pure romance! I read that in the past a woman accepting lilies from a man basically meant they were betrothed. I like the idea that someone who couldn’t afford a ring could still ask for her hand in marriage. The growing flowers around the couple represent blooming love.
